What you're actually up against
Phishing & Social Engineering
Employees can be tricked into revealing passwords or sensitive information.
Ransomware
Attackers can encrypt business data and demand payment to restore access.
Weak Passwords
Compromised or reused passwords can provide attackers with access to business systems.
Unpatched Systems
Outdated software can contain vulnerabilities that attackers exploit.
Data Breaches
Sensitive customer, employee and business information can be exposed or stolen.
If your business runs on Microsoft 365, you are in good company. Your email lives in Outlook, your files sit in SharePoint or OneDrive, your team collaborates in Teams, and your whole identity layer is managed through Entra ID. Millions of UK small businesses have built their daily operations on this platform, and for good reason. It is reliable, well-supported, and genuinely capable.
But there is a gap that most Microsoft 365 users only discover when something goes wrong. Microsoft is responsible for keeping the platform running. Keeping your data safe, recoverable, and protected from threats that use Microsoft 365 as the entry point -- that part is yours to sort out. The platform staying online is not the same as your files being backed up. The email service working is not the same as it catching every sophisticated phishing attempt. And your team being able to log in today is not the same as your identity configuration being recoverable if it is tampered with or corrupted.
This bundle is built for SMEs that have put their trust in Microsoft 365 and want to make sure that trust is actually backed by the right protection underneath it.
Why these services work together
A standard Microsoft 365 subscription leaves four real gaps. This bundle closes all of them.
Your data is not backed up. Microsoft 365 retains deleted items for a short window and keeps the service available, but it does not create point-in-time backups of your mailboxes, OneDrive files, SharePoint sites, or Teams conversations. If ransomware encrypts your files, a sync error overwrites a folder, or something is quietly deleted and nobody notices for weeks, you may have no way back. Microsoft 365 Backup changes that. It gives you genuine recovery points so that if something goes wrong, you are choosing when to restore from, not whether restoration is even possible.
Your identity layer is just as exposed as your data. Entra ID controls who can log in, what they can access, which devices are trusted, and how your directory is structured. Most business owners never think about it directly because it just sits there working. But if that configuration is corrupted after a failed admin change, tampered with following a breach, or partially wiped, rebuilding it manually is slow and error-prone -- and your team may not be able to work in the meantime. Identity Backup gives you a recoverable snapshot of your directory so you can get back to a known-good state quickly.
The built-in email filters do not catch everything. Microsoft 365 handles everyday spam well, but the attacks it tends to miss are the crafted ones. Links that appear safe at delivery but redirect to something dangerous when clicked. Documents that behave differently in a real inbox than in a scanning environment. Impersonation attempts built to closely mimic a supplier or a senior member of your team. Advanced Email Threat Protection adds a second layer of inspection aimed specifically at these techniques, checking links again at the moment of click and scanning attachments in a way that reflects real-world behaviour.
The endpoint is still the most common entry point. Your laptops and desktops are where your team actually works, and they are where most attacks ultimately land. Standard antivirus matches files against a list of known threats. Next-Generation Antivirus watches how software behaves on the device. If a process starts behaving like ransomware -- encrypting files at unusual speed, reaching out to an external server, disabling security tools -- it can catch and contain that behaviour even if the specific file has never been seen before.
These four services do not overlap. Each one protects a different part of your Microsoft 365 environment, and removing any one of them leaves a gap the others cannot fill.

Microsoft 365 Security Bundle questions
No, and this is the assumption that catches most Microsoft 365 users off guard. Microsoft is responsible for keeping the platform running and the service available. It is not responsible for backing up your data in the way most people understand that word. There is a deleted items folder and a short retention window, but if data is overwritten, corrupted, or deleted outside that window -- whether by ransomware, accidental deletion, or a sync error that nobody noticed for several weeks -- you may have no recovery option without a proper backup in place.
Entra ID is the identity and access layer that sits behind Microsoft 365. It controls who can sign in to your systems, what each person can access, which devices are trusted, and how your whole directory is configured. Most SME owners never interact with it directly because it quietly does its job in the background. The problem is that if your Entra ID configuration is corrupted following a failed admin change, tampered with after a breach, or partially deleted, rebuilding it manually is a slow and error-prone process. In the meantime your team may be locked out or working with incorrect permissions. Identity Backup gives you a recoverable snapshot so you can restore to a known-good state without starting from scratch.
For high-volume everyday spam, the filtering built into Microsoft 365 does a reasonable job. Where it tends to struggle is with targeted, crafted attacks. A link can appear completely safe when the email is delivered and only redirect to something malicious when a person clicks it hours later. An attachment can behave differently when opened in a real inbox than when scanned in a controlled environment. And impersonation attempts built to mimic your managing director or a trusted supplier can be engineered closely enough to pass the standard filters. Advanced threat protection adds a second layer of inspection built specifically for these techniques, including checking links again at the moment of click, not just at delivery.
Traditional antivirus works by comparing files against a database of known threats. If the threat is new, or if an attacker has modified it enough to look different from anything on that list, it can get through undetected. Next-generation antivirus takes a different approach. Instead of asking what a file looks like, it watches what software does on the device. If a process starts encrypting large numbers of files at unusual speed, reaches out to an unfamiliar external server, or tries to disable security tooling, that behaviour gets flagged and contained. This means it can catch threats that have never been seen before, not just the ones already in a database.
That is exactly the scenario this bundle is built to limit the impact of. Advanced email threat protection aims to prevent the phishing email from reaching the inbox in the first place, and then checks links again at the moment of click rather than only at delivery. If something does get through and tries to run on the device, next-generation antivirus provides a second layer of detection based on behaviour. And if the attack manages to corrupt or encrypt data, the backup services mean you have a recovery point to go back to. No single layer is a guarantee, but having all four in place means a successful attack has to clear a series of obstacles rather than just one.
Each service closes a different gap and they do not overlap. The backup services give you recovery options if something goes wrong with your data or identity configuration. Email threat protection reduces the chance of a threat getting into the business in the first place. Endpoint protection catches things that make it past email and onto a device. You could run any one of them on its own and get some value, but removing any single one leaves an opening the others cannot cover. The four together address the real gaps in a standard Microsoft 365 setup. That is why this is a bundle rather than a menu.
Recovery time depends on how much data needs to be restored and the nature of the incident. But the more important point is this: with proper backups in place, you have options. You can restore from a clean point in time and choose how far back you go. Without backups, your options are limited to whatever Microsoft has retained in its short-window deletion policy -- and when that window has passed, the choice is often between starting over and paying a ransom, which still does not guarantee you get anything back. Having the backup removes that corner entirely.
Small businesses are actively targeted -- partly because attackers assume the security posture will be weaker, and partly because the attacks themselves are largely automated and do not filter by company size. The tactics involved in phishing, ransomware, and credential theft are the same whether you have eight employees or eight hundred. The practical question is whether the cost of a successful attack -- lost data, downtime, recovery effort, potential regulatory implications under UK GDPR, and reputational damage -- is higher than the cost of having the right safeguards running in the background. For most UK small businesses running on Microsoft 365, that calculation is not a close call.
