Cyber Essentials for Education
Schools, academy trusts, colleges and universities hold detailed personal data on children, staff and families, including safeguarding records that carry real consequences if exposed, and the sector has suffered a string of high profile ransomware attacks that shut down entire school networks for weeks at a time. The Department for Education and many local authorities now reference recognised security standards in funding conditions and supplier requirements, and academy trusts in particular are expected to demonstrate proportionate cyber security as part of good governance. Education IT estates are also often a patchwork of older systems built up over years, which is exactly the kind of environment where basic gaps go unnoticed until something goes wrong.
Why it matters for education

This covers academy trusts, maintained schools, colleges and universities, and the education technology suppliers whose products connect into school or university systems or handle pupil and student data.
Common threats faced
- Ransomware on student records
- Safeguarding data exposure
- Weak legacy network segmentation
- Phishing via compromised staff accounts
Steps to get certified
A guided, hands-on path from scoping to certificate, no jargon, no guesswork.
Scoping
We agree the boundary of your assessment: a device, a network, or your whole organisation.
Self-Assessment
Complete a guided questionnaire against the five technical controls, with our support throughout.
Review
We check your submission and flag anything that needs addressing before it goes for formal assessment.
Certification
Your certificate is issued, backed by IASME/NCSC accreditation, valid for 12 months.
Education questions
It depends on how centrally your IT is managed. Where systems are shared and centrally controlled, the trust can often certify as a single scope covering all its schools, but where individual schools run genuinely separate networks, they may need to be considered individually. It's worth mapping out your actual IT setup before deciding how to scope the assessment.
Cyber Essentials doesn't treat safeguarding data differently to any other personal data, it checks the underlying technical controls, like access management and patching, that protect whatever information sits on your systems. Because safeguarding records are so sensitive, many schools choose to add extra access restrictions on top of what certification requires.
The apps themselves are usually outside the direct scope if they're cloud services you don't administer, but how staff accounts that manage or integrate with those tools are secured, including admin logins and single sign-on setups, is very much part of the assessment. It's worth listing every third-party platform your school uses before starting.
There's no blanket rule, and it depends on the specific funding body, research contract or partner requiring it. Universities handling higher value or sensitive research data sometimes find funders or industry partners ask for the more rigorous, independently tested level, so it's worth checking each grant or contract rather than assuming either level applies universally.
